At Beechcliffe School (Thackley), Preparation for Adulthood (PfA) is formally introduced from Year 9 and is embedded within each student’s Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP). Our students often require extended, carefully tailored support to build the confidence, independence, and resilience necessary for a successful transition into adult life.
The PfA framework is woven through the curriculum and school culture, both in structured teaching and through meaningful day-to-day interactions. Pupils experience a formal taught curriculum, benefit from structured and planned real-life experiences, and are continually supported by the positive culture and relationships embedded throughout the school:
1. Higher Education and Employment
Students explore future aspirations and begin developing the academic and personal skills needed to access further education, training, or employment. Early exposure to work-related learning, vocational tasters and careers guidance is provided to help inform next steps.
2. Independent Living
Core life skills are introduced progressively, including cooking, budgeting, personal care, and understanding responsibilities in the home and community. This early focus lays the groundwork for independence in later years.
3. Community Participation
We support students to develop a sense of identity, belonging and social connection through participation in local projects, volunteering, and civic activities. These experiences foster teamwork, communication and empathy.
4. Health and Wellbeing
Students are supported to understand their emotions, develop strategies for self-regulation, and make healthy lifestyle choices. We emphasise both physical health and emotional wellbeing, promoting lifelong resilience.
By the time students reach post-16, they have already begun to build the essential foundations needed for adult life through a combination of planned experiences, curriculum content, and the wider school ethos.
